Korea Exhibition

The First Exhibition of the MSCHF Artist Group Showcases in Korea.

At the end of last year, there was a controversy surrounding the damage to the walls of Gyeongbokgung, the royal palace of the Joseon dynasty in South Korea. The vandalism was attributed to two groups. One of the perpetrators mentioned in his blog that he was lamb of MSCHF, after spray-painting on the wall.

That was revealed as merely an excuse, his real intent was to attract attention from public. However, the name MSCHF stuck in my mind since that incident. Upon searching for information about them, I discovered that they were hosting an exhibition near Gyeongbok Palace, which was recently damaged.

I don’t know much about them, but I’ve seen some pictures on Instagram of celebrities wearing their cartoonish Red Atom shoes. Additionally, the Satan shoes, a collaboration with Lil Nas X, caused massive controversy worldwide, especially among Christians. Their art often sparks controversy, and the public becomes obsessed with their work, even if they don’t know the team’s name.

Where’s exhibition?

Anyway, they held their first exhibition at the Dearim Art Museum, located just 5 minutes away from the west gate of Gyeongbok Palace. Initially, I worried if their artwork was merely designed to attract attention. However, their exhibition blew my mind. It was filled with satire, humor, and topped with sarcasm.

What’s special with MSCHF?

All of their artwork throws questions at people, cheekily testing them through their pieces. I felt like I also became one of their subjects. MSCHF aims to twist stereotypes and prejudices, prompting the community and the world to think differently. However, beneath the surface, they face backlash and legal challenges for their anti-authority creations. Their art reevaluates common things as luxurious, somehow making me feel relaxed. Yes, their artwork is strange, but it brings a sense of comfort. They seem to encourage the idea that it’s okay to be different and that all kinds of art are welcome in the world.

If you’re intrigued by innovative artwork or a big fan of MSCHF, we hope to see you at the Dearim Art Museum until March 31, 2024.
