About Nowon Station area

Are you living around or planning to visit Nowon station (metro line Number 4, 7)? Nowon is a playground for the youth, usually under 20 years old due to the character of this Nowon district. Nowon district has the nickname ‘Sochidong’ (Small Daechidong). Due to the many schools and children living here, this district is highly competitive for education compared to Daechidong. You may know Daechidong as the background stage of the TV show ‘The glory’. Anyway, there are some food streets and commercial complexes around Nowon station, which means it has a wide selection of restaurants and food. Café Gamgak is situated on the largest food street.

Antique and Modern view

This café has two entrances, and I decided to enter through the back door. Personally, I favored its deep green exterior color. I didn’t recognize it as the entrance at first due to its drawing-like wall. Once inside, I found a modern atmosphere. Despite visiting on a Sunday, there weren’t many customers. I planned to work there, but all the wide tables were too low for using a lap top, and the suitable height tables were too small. I finally settled for a small but tall enough table.

“Gamgak” means “Sense” in English, and I understood why they take pride in their sense. Each item is so classical, yet maintains a certain tone and manner. I was just wearing a training costume, feeling out of place in this elegant setting. I imagined it would be more suitable to wear a Baroque-style evening dress with flower patterns. As I searched their menu, I found out that Soufflé is their specialty. While Plain Soufflé is always available, I decided to order the Seasonal Fruit topped Soufflé.

Seasonal fruit topped Souffle’

Since I visited during autumn, they offered a peach Soufflé. Additionally, they had a wide range of teas and drinks, so I chose a hot Americano. The staff informed me that it would take around 15 to 20 minutes to bake. However, based on recent reviews, it might take up to an hour due to the crowd.

The buzzer rang, and I retrieved my tray. Indeed, it looked beautiful, perfect for Instagram. The peach soufflé was smooth and resilient, not as sweet as I had imagined. Although it didn’t look big, it was enough for one meal. The Americano didn’t leave a strong impression, but it was worth its cheap price. If two people are there, I suggest ordering tea instead. It’s served with a classical teapot, which matches the vibe of the place. For photos, consider dressing up in a flower-patterned evening dress. 🙂
