Korean Souvenir Road

Do you have plans to visit the National Museum of Korea? And if you’re having trouble deciding what souvenir to buy for your friend or colleague?

I hope it’s not just me. Every time I travel to another country, I feel panicked about which souvenirs I should buy, especially for special people or for myself. Personally, I’m attracted to the items in souvenir shops at museums because of their classical designs. However, it’s hard to find high-quality items at a reasonable price or items that aren’t too classic for everyday use.

RM, fall in love with pensive bodhisattva

Pensive bodhisattvas are sitting on the right.

But since 2020, there have been significant innovations in souvenir offerings. The National Museum of Korea constructed a special exhibition room called the “Room of Quiet Contemplation” for two national treasures, the “Pensive Bodhisattva.” The smile of these Bodhisattvas caught the attention of RM from BTS. He shared his exploration of the exhibition room and placed Pensive Bodhisattva goods in his music studio.

Sensation of Museum goods

It was a sensation. Nobody knew the museum allowed not only exact replicas in original colors but also vivid or pastel-colored replicas made from resin. So, some tourists hesitant to buy replicas costing at least 100,000 won (worth about 76 dollars) now have more options at 40% less. Since it became a steady seller, they’ve boosted striking design by hosting design competitions. All souvenirs in the museum draw inspiration from traditional patterns, relics, and art.

As a country that loves to drink alcohol, the Soju Glass set is a hot item among them now. It features a drawing of a hangover man on its body, depicting ‘Celebrations for the Governor of Pyeongyang’ by folk painter Hongdo Kim. Once you pour Soju (traditional alcohol) into it, the man’s face will turn red, completing his drunk look.

It has its own online shop, but I recommend visiting the museum souvenir shop in person. Even for Koreans, the selection online is limited compared to what’s available in-store. Plus, you might stumble upon limited edition items onsite.
