DMZ

The DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is an important tourism attraction in South Korea due to its significant historical meaning. Tourists used to visit the DMZ to experience its tension, sometimes encountering real-time conflicts. The 3rd Tunnel is a particularly popular attraction among the 160-mile neutral belt.

After Korea war

For Koreans, the tension around North Korea’s actions doesn’t evoke as much anxiety. Korea has been divided for over 70 years since the Korean War. Provocations from North Korea are seen as habitual rather than impactful, especially as those who experienced the war age and pass away.
Moreover, the old-fashioned emphasis on national security through fear is evolving, as the mindset of the younger generation shifts towards peaceful unification. Organizations are spearheading new initiatives in this vast area, with the DMZ Peace Train Music Festival being one such effort. Hosted by Cheorwon County, Seoul, and Gangwon Province’s Cheorwon District, this festival aims to promote peace and unity.

Cheorwon, DMZ

Located in the center of the Korean peninsula, Cheorwon was once the capital of an ancient kingdom and is renowned for its expansive rice fields. Historically one of Korea’s wealthiest regions, it is brimming with relics, although many remain inaccessible due to landmines. Against this backdrop of rich history, the DMZ Peace Train Music Festival is set to take place on June 15th-16th, 2024.

Peace as theme

The Peace Train prioritizes showcasing how music aids in bridging political, economic, and ideological divides, fostering a collective journey toward freedom and peace.
The music festival, previously spanning two days and rooted in rock, now embraces diversity in nationality, genre, and age, advocating for a boundary-free world through dance. It features a diverse lineup, from emerging talents to legendary artists.

Starting last year, they introduced a camping site for participants. Although it’s fully booked, tickets are still available, and the festival site is accessible via public transportation.
