My little coffee shop – 13

Location

Euljiro has become a trendsetting area, especially under the influence of the Newtro (new retro) movement. One of the most representative cafes is Coffee HanYakBang, which I posted about earlier. However, there are various types of cafes located around Coffee HanYakBang. Coffee Sa is one of them, just a 10-minute walk away.

Meaning

Because Coffee Sa is surrounded by small factories, characteristic of this district, I initially thought ‘Sa’ meant ‘company.’ However, I was mistaken. In Korean, ‘Sa’ is often added to denote a professional, such as Byeonho Sa (Lawyer), Yori Sa (Chef), or Masul Sa (Magician). However, the term ‘barista’ is usually used as is, without an emphasis on professional skills. To highlight the professionalism of their baristas, the owner of Coffee Sa added ‘Sa’ to the end of ‘coffee,’ emphasizing its importance.

The entrance

My friend and I had a bit of trouble finding the entrance. It is literally located in the middle of the factories, and the entrance doesn’t face the pavement. The gate, which faces a wall, and the steep stairs tell us how long this building has been around. TThe thick steel door, which seems to echo the sound of machines, invites us into the coffee shop. 

Interior

The size of the cafe was bigger than we expected, and all of their furniture seemed to be second-hand. Some of the tables and chairs might have come from a school, but we found a different set and took a seat. The menu features a few types of coffee and tea, with a relatively simple selection. Both of us chose drip coffee, made with beans from Fritz, my friend’s favorite. 

Euljirolistic

They placed various plants among the tables and on the window shelves. My favorite aspect of this cafe was the plant on the window shelf, which allowed people to see the retro landscape of Euljiro. It made me think of the term ‘Euljirolistic’(Euljiroum).
