Who’s Poet Dongju Yoon?
Dongju Yoon is the most beloved poet in Korea, with his poems often included in school textbooks. His collection, “Sky and Wind and Star and Poem,” immerses readers in poetry from the very title. The book “Sky and Wind and Star and Poem” is his posthumous work. “Seosi” (Prologue) is included in this book as the first poem. Dongju Yoon did not give this poem a title. But it is commonly called as “Seosi” (Prologue) among the people due to its placement on his book.
As an Independent activist
Although his poetry was very sentimental, he was a strong independent activist. Therefore, most Korean analysts interpret his poems as being filled with his desire for independence and his love for his nation. He died in Fukuoka prison at the age of 20 due to his firm commitment as an independent activist along with his cousin Mongyu Song. His biography was filmed in 2016 under the title “Dongju,” starring Haneul Gang and Jeongmin Bak.
Beloved by enermy
Ironically, his talent couldn’t be hidden even after his death. The university Dongju Yoon attended, Doshisha University in Japan, erected a stele in his honor. Additionally, there are Japanese social groups that commemorate him. One of his cousins, Hyeongju Yoon, is also a famous artist who creates commercial jingles and lyrical music, suggesting a familial artistic inclination.
