The hottest cafe in Seoul is no wonder. On the site of Hyeminseo, a national oriental hospital in the Joseon dynasty, Coffee HanYakBang opened in 2012.
Owner
The owner was an actor. EulJiRo was his playground after plays in the 1980s. He nurtured his dream here for a long time. But he felt regret as most of their playground was wiped out due to gentrification. Their playground quickly transformed into office buildings. Their dreams shifted to HongDae and Gangnam, and Euljiro seemed to be fading away.
Why, here?
In the article I read, the interviewer asked him why he chose to open Coffee HanYakBang here. This area is under a redevelopment plan. And it’s certain that this place will be demolished, much like its neighboring areas. “I felt sad that romantic places were destroyed in the name of redevelopment without any preservation. I’d like to revive the ambiance of this place like Pimatgol (the narrow alleys with gourmet restaurants in JongRo), which has charming small houses and restaurants in narrow alleys.
Ambience
People are mesmerized by its vintage interior before tasting coffee. The cafe is decorated with traditional wardrobe doors on the walls. It creating a magnificent ambiance. Each item is meticulously selected to balance with the other furniture. And it is transporting visitors to the early 1900s. The owner was formerly a carpenter. He led a theater group named Carpenter before becoming an actor.

Normally, we order filter coffee, which means it will take a little while until you get your coffee. Coffee HanYakBang offers a few selections of coffee beans according to taste preferences. For those who want dessert, you can choose from the bread and cake options at HyeMinDang, right opposite Coffee HanYakBang. This dessert shop is owned by the same owner. I could enjoy dessert with your coffee at the same table.

Unfortunately, this site is also under the redevelopment plan. I’d like to deny it, but I found thnext block that has already been demolished due to the plan. This coffee shop will perish someday, but its beauty lies in its eventual end.
